Welcome to Ben Mettam's KaratePerth, located in Doubleview, Western Australia. At KaratePerth, we believe in the power of exercise, healthy living, and a supportive environment to improve our well-being. That's why we offer Gōjū-ryū Karate-Do, led by Ben, as a way to help you or your children achieve personal growth and resilience.

Ben's martial arts journey started at the age of 8 with Judo, under the tutelage of Andrew Fleming, O.A.M. At 18, he shifted his focus to Gōjū-ryū Karate-Do and has been a dedicated student of Yamaguchi Gōjū-ryū, part of the International Karate-Do Gōjū-ryū Association (I.K.G.A.), for 35 years. Ben continually seeks to enhance his skills by attending seminars, competitions, and training sessions globally.

With 45 years of martial arts experience and 25 years of secondary school teaching, Ben excels at providing high-quality karate lessons and continuously finds innovative ways to help you achieve your goals. His impressive track record includes numerous victories and placements in local and international Karate competitions, showcasing his commitment to excellence.

KaratePerth is a member of the Australian (A.K.F) and World (W.K.F) karate federations, as well as the I.K.G.A., which has over 70 member nations organizing international competitions and seminars.

HISTORY OF GOJU KAI KARATE

Goju-kai translates as "hard-soft style" and is one of the main traditional Okinawan styles of karate.

It features a combination of hard and soft styles techniques. Goju-Kai Karate-Do was founded by Gogen Yamaguchi，山口剛玄（1909-1989）in Japan. He is recognized as one of the greatest Karate masters. He was the founder of what might be called modern Karate, an advanced stage which illustrates both a technical and social elevation of the art of Karate. Master Yamaguchi originated "jiyu-kumite", the sparring aspect of Karate exercise.
